Josh Wink @ Ultra Music Festival 28-03-2008

admin | March 31, 2008

Josh Wink appeared to lack for nothing at the peak of his success in the mid-’90s. Part of the East Coast/Philadelphia dance scene, Wink recorded three trance monsters out of his bedroom studio (as Wink, Winx, and Size 9) that topped charts in Europe during 1995 and saw him anointed as a dance poster boy, easily recognized by his ruddy good looks and flowing blond dreadlocks. Hardly the techno kingpin, however, Wink’s espousal of a vegan lifestyle and his defiantly anti-drug ideals made him something of a unique personality in the hedonistic world of dance music.

Tom Wax @ Cocoon Club 30-03-2008

admin |

As his stage name might suggest, Tom Wax (real name Thomas Wedel) has a predilection for releasing work on vinyl. In fact, a great many of his singles are not available on CD (though you may find them on various European dance compilations).

Jay Denham @ Awakenings 23-03-2008

admin |

Detroit-area techno producer Jay Denham arose in the wake of the initial late-’80s Chicago and Detroit movements. He produced tracks for many of Detroit’s major labels before starting his own label, Black Nation, and establishing a small scene in his hometown of Kalamazoo, a city halfway between Detroit and Chicago.

Octave One @ Awakenings 23-03-2008

admin |

One of the more anachronistic teams in the Detroit techno underground, Octave One’s rough-and-tumble production values gel with most Motor City crews but for Lawrence Burden and his two brothers, the focus is completely on music with little political or social aesthetics behind their tracks. Burden originally began DJing in 1987 in a collective named VLE Nu AGE, then recorded a single in 1989 with the help of brothers Lynell and Lenny plus Anthony Shakir, Jay Denham and Juan Atkins. Originally released on Derrick May’s Transmat Records, “I Believe” made waves after being compiled onto the British Detroit compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, helping the Burdens form Direct Beat/430 West Records (originally located at 430 West 8 Mile Road in Detroit).

Dave Clarke @ White Noise 29-03-2008

admin |

By the millennium many first generation techno DJs had fallen by the wayside, drifting off up blind allies and sub-genres, but Clarke’s sets, his extraordinary mixing skills mashing up techno, electro, ghetto-tek, hip hop and even 1980s new wave numbers, remained in constant demand.

Minupren @ Jungle Club 15-03-2008

admin |
MinuPren`s music is not easy to describe. Sometimes its hardtechno , sometimes break , hardcore or anything else… But one thing is always the same : “Its crazy an it has it`s own flair”. And when he is spinning with vinyl on a party you never know what happens next.Even this makes his crazy style impossible to copy.

RA.096 Dinky - 31-03-2008

admin |

This week on the RA podcast: Dinky mixes up a set of deep and sexy minimal (with a few surprises along the way).
Right place, right time: Alejandra Iglesias (aka Dinky) might just be the Zelig of electronic music. Born in Chile, she hung out with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack and others in the mid-‘90s when she was first getting into dance music. Then, when she moved to New York on a dance scholarship, she got caught up with the Minus crew, just as Magda and Richie Hawtin were first hanging out in Gotham in the late ‘90s.

O.B.I. & Frank Kvitta @ Hard Noize 2 (New York) 15-03-2007

admin |

In 2002 ,Tobias Lüke aka OBI, after a few successful gigs, he began to organise his own events called TekkTribe which grew into a fully-fledged booking agency and a label in 2003. TekkTribe started to become an established name for Hardtechno as they released records like the infamous “Gehörsturz EP” and organised parties with well-known faces of the scene.

Mario Ranieri is today Austria’s most famous hardtechno-producer and dj. Mario’s great dj sets are as hard to categorize. Just like his tracks, they go from groovy house, to stomping hardtechno, punky hardcore and crazy noise.
